On 4 February 1962, Hilti von Allmen and Paul Etter completed the first winter ascent of the north face of the Matterhorn via the Schmidt route. The ascent took a total of two days. Also on the face were the Austrians Erich Krempke and Leo Schlömmer, and the Germans Werner Bittner, Rainer Kauschke and Peter Siegert, who completed the ascent 20 hours after the two Swiss climbers.
